  • allow students to boost their English learning through reading (find out more here)
  • provide students with a quiet, comfortable, and home-like environment to ease stress and support mental health
  • give students easy access to books that suit their reading level, level of maturity, and interests

It’s important that we include our students in the planning and creation of the reading corner. The first step is to find out which books our students would like to read. Of course, students will be more motivated to pick up a book and continue to read when it is challenging if they find the subject matter engaging. Another reason to include our students in the planning process is to foster a sense of control, ownership and pride in their education. This is empowering for all students but particularly needed by our students as they have little control, ownership and often pride in their lives as a whole.

Involve Students in the Planning Process

  • questions that evolve in reading difficulty as the questionnaire continues
  • encourage students to continue as far as they are able with no pressure to complete all questions
  • begin with questions that use visual queues
  • advance to written questions with multiple-choice or simple answers
  • end with questions that prompt open-ended responses
